If you're thinking about embarking on a DIY project as the weather warms up, you might want to put the drill down until you've read this.
One in three homes is said to contain asbestos, particularly in wet areas of older homes built or renovated before the mid-1980s like bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.
While the manufacture and use of asbestos product was banned nationally from December 31, 2003, symptoms of asbestos dust related diseases don't appear until about 20 to 30 years after the first exposure.
Andrew Gibson from Central West Asbestos Removal said that while there's a lot of red-tape around asbestos removal, a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis and there is no safe level of exposure.
"It's a bit like driving a car - if you do the right thing, it's not dangerous. If you do the wrong thing, it's lethal," Mr Gibson said.
"If in doubt, mask up."
