DALLAS — The national law firm of Baron and Budd has responded to the alleged link between type 2 diabetes and Lipitor use in women by initiating investigations into Lipitor lawsuits. Lipitor is a popular cholesterol-lowering drug used to lower LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, and triglycerides. At this time there has been no recall of Lipitor due to its alleged risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required that Pfizer, the manufacturer of Lipitor, list the associated type 2 diabetes risk on the drug’s warning label after results from several studies have found a suspected link between Lipitor use and type 2 diabetes.
The link between Lipitor use and type 2 diabetes in women comes at a time when the increased harm of side effects associated with dangerous drugs has become increasingly more evident in women. In May of 2013, the American Association of Justice (AAJ) published an article titled Unequal Harm: The Disproportionate Damage to Women from Dangerous Drugs and Medical Devices that begins to expose the increased susceptibility some women may have to dangerous drugs. The article claims that women often respond differently than men to medical devices and drugs; however, women are often left out of drug and product safety inspections and testing. What’s more, the article claims that women are sometimes more susceptible to a drug’s associated risk because of different hormones and body compositions.
“We believe that the pharmaceutical industry needs to address the specific risks related to female consumers,” said Russell Budd of Baron and Budd. “When doctors report more alleged cases of type 2 diabetes in female patients while taking Lipitor, that means the drug might not only be dangerous, but also that the manufacturer’s accountability in testing their entire consumer base is in question.”
Lipitor joins the ranks of dangerous drugs that have recently been alleged to hurt women, such as the Nuva Ring, Ortho Evra and Yasmin/Yaz.
