ST. LOUIS — As part of the growing GranuFlo lawsuit, the national law firm of Baron and Budd is investigating NaturaLyte, a lesser known but potentially harmful dialysate also manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care.
Both NaturaLyte and GranuFlo are alleged to increase a patient’s risk of heart attack. While GranuFlo comes in a powder acid concentrate, NaturaLyte is manufactured as a liquid acid concentrate. Both liquid and powder forms allegedly increase the levels of bicarbonate in the blood, in turn increasing the risk of heart attack if additional doses of bicarbonate prescriptions are not adjusted.
Dialysis is a long-term medical treatment used to manage kidney conditions. Dialysates - such as GranuFlo and NaturaLyte - are the liquids used to filter a patient's blood during dialysis.
"The manufacturers of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte should have warned users about the serious heart attacks risks associated with their products as soon as they were made aware,” said Russell Budd of Baron and Budd. “Had doctors and patients been more aware of these risks, lives could have been saved."
Over 400,000 Americans currently undergo dialysis treatments. More than one-third of these patients receive their dialysis care with Fresenius, the world's largest manufacturer of dialysis products and services.
