The national law firm of Baron and Budd reports that plaintiffs involved in the Lipitor lawsuits are urging the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) to order a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL). Cases like the Lipitor lawsuit are typically consolidated in a MDL in order to speed up the trial process. Most of the Lipitor lawsuit claims involve women who allegedly developed type 2 diabetes while taking the popular cholesterol-lowering drug.
Both male and female patients have taken Lipitor to treat their LDL or “bad cholesterol” for over twenty-five years; however only recently has the associated risk of developing type 2 diabetes come into question. In 2012 the risk of developing type 2 diabetes was brought to the attention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiating a label update for the product to warn about the heightened risk of elevated blood sugar.
Concerned about recent studies signifying the link between Lipitor and the development of type 2 diabetes the FDA has also begun to require manufacturers of other cholesterol-lowering statin drugs such as Pfizer the manufacturer of Lipitor to cite the associated sugar level risk on their warning labels.
