Mesothelioma Awareness Day was first established in 2004 by volunteers of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF). In 2010, a Congressional Declaration made official recognition of the day. The mission of the national event is to increase awareness and raise funds to potentially find a cure for mesothelioma cancer. *
According to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, Mesothelioma Awareness Day 2013 events include the Mission Cure Meso: Run for a Cure, 3rd Annual Kayaking 4 Meso event, as well as 5k runs, walks and family activities held across the country. A September 26th Rockefeller Plaza event will raise mesothelioma awareness at the Today show and on September 27th, the regional conference on malignant mesothelioma will be held in New York City.**
Mesothelioma cancer is generally linked to asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral that was commonly used in many industrial, construction and manufacturing products during the 1940s to the 1970s. Individuals with mesothelioma may not develop symptoms for several decades after being exposed. While some mesothelioma treatments do exist, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma cancer. The symptoms of the disease can include breathing problems, chest pain, abdominal pain, nausea or weakness.***
