Sept. 26 is Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Of course, we all know the current month and date, if not, I am sure it is at the top of this page.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer. Unlike most other deadly cancers, mesothelioma has a definite, proven, and well-known cause. Asbestos causes this cancer of the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. Even a tiny amount of asbestos can remain in the body for years and -- like a bomb waiting to go off -- kill people long after they breathed in a microscopic particle of asbestos.

There are standards for almost any poison. Even arsenic, a famous conventional poison, is ineffective in a tiny dose.

Some radiation can be useful for X-rays or other medical tests. Sometimes radiation poison can even cure a person who has cancer. Many people are alive and well because they survived deadly radiation that killed their cancer. That's amazing, ironic, scary and wonderful!

So, what is the safe level for asbestos? That's easy to remember: Zero. That's right, absolutely none! Any amount of asbestos can cause the deadly cancer called mesothelioma.

Sept. 26 is Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Please be careful, and remember this: No amount of asbestos is safe.
