Asbestos 'abundant' at GTAC bulk sampling location - Sawyer County Record

A pair of scientists, making a field trip to Site Number Four of the proposed locations where Gogebic Taconite plans to conduct bulk sample operations, has found at least 100 pounds of asbestoform grunerite in two piles within an old test pit.

University of Wisconsin Geochemist Joseph Skulan and Northland College Geologist Tom Fitz made the trip to the location in eastern Ashland County last Thursday. It is the same site that grunerite was positively identified by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, using X-Ray diffraction analysis as well as high-resolution scanning electron microscope images of the samples, proving that it was the asbestoform form of the mineral.
