11 Gifts that Give Back

This time of year is one for spreading good cheer and goodwill onto others, but it doesn’t have to come in the form of big wrapped boxes under a tree. For a cancer patient or caregiver, gift giving can create unnecessary stress because it is another task to think about, as well as the financial obligation that they may not be able to provide. On the other hand, patients and caregivers who have already gone through cancer treatment may want to pay it forward or give back to their family, friends and community who have helped them out during tough times in the past. Gifts can come in all shapes and sizes; here are some ways to give more without spending more this holiday season.

Gifts to Give a Cancer Patient or Caregiver

If you have a loved one going through treatment or caring for someone sick, getting gifts will probably be the last thing on their mind. But you can still show you care and spread some holiday cheer in many different ways. Setting some time aside for a coffee date or doing some simple chores will be much more appreciated than any other gift attempt. Here are some more ideas--

  • Write a handwritten letter to a loved one or give a photo of you together

  • Take the time to check in with loved ones with a phone call or a visit

  • Offer to cook a special meal they really love to celebrate the holidays

  • Cook some food to store in the freezer for quick, easy to heat meals

  • Rent a new movie or choose a holiday classic and stay in for a movie night

  • Create gift certificates for household chores and errands-- laundry, grocery shopping, babysitting, a ride to a doctor’s appointment, etc.

Gifts From a Cancer Patient or Caregiver

After going through treatment, a patient or caregiver may want to give back to those who helped them and the cancer community in general. Here are a few ways to give this holiday season that doesn't cost more than your time and love--

  • Raise awareness for a specific disease by participating in an event, donating money, or donating your social media status

  • Non-profit organizations, community centers, and churches often run holiday drives for food, goods, and gifts for those less fortunate. Choose a place in your community to give to or volunteer your time too

  • Some in the senior citizen community may not have many visitors or holiday plans, take time to visit people in nursing homes

  • Join a cancer support group and help those going through diagnosis and treatment

  • Give blood

These are a few great ideas to give in meaningful ways that don't involve heading to the mall. Join our online community and share other ways to give back this holiday season!
