Southfield, Michigan - The Breath of Life Foundation, a charity which raises funds for asbestos-related health research, has selected Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, as the recipient of an initial $60,000 grant. As a result, Providence Hospital will work in collaboration with the foundation to gain greater understanding of mesothelioma and other diseases caused or exacerbated by asbestos exposure.

Dr. Michael Harbut, the chief of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the hospital, will lead the research. An expert in the diagnosis and treatment of environmental and workplace diseases, Dr. Harbut has developed blood tests which help identify asbestos-related tumors sooner, leading to expedited treatment. Harbut and his team also created a program to improve physicians’ abilities in detecting, treating, and monitoring asbestos-related illnesses.

Providence Hospital is a part of the St. John Providence Health System, one of the largest inpatient care providers in Michigan. SJPHS spans five counties, and it is comprised of more than 125 medical centers and five hospitals.

Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases continue to plague thousands of people each year. Now that the hazardous properties of asbestos are well-documented and impossible to deny, research such as that being done at Providence Hospital is vital to the next step in the process: a cure.
