Share on Facebook! An octogenarian from Rockaway claims that repair work promised to her by the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity after the devastation from Hurricane Sandy fell well short of her expectations.

Barbara Hillary, 82, is the first African-American woman to reach both the North and South Poles.

But Hillary claims that her local Habitat for Humanity did not clean and abate mold growing in her basement satisfactorily. According to Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance News, Habitat for Humanity says the work was not completed because Hillary refused to let the workers into her home while she was out, which Hillary denies.

Also, according to the New York Post, an unlicensed contractor took partial payment from the Red Cross to fix Hillary’s kitchen, did part of the work and flew to Nigeria.

“I’m not a crybaby. I was raised in Harlem during the Depression — I was raised old-school,” Hillary said, according to the New York Post. “I don’t want to die as a result of group incompetence.”

Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance News notes that mold and asbestos can be lethal if left untreated. Asbestos is highly toxic, and exposure is linked to lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.

According to barbarahillary.com, Hillary reached the South Pole in 2011 after getting to the North Pole on skis in 2007 at age 75. Hillary is a lung cancer survivor.
