ENDICOTT >> The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will hold a public meeting later this month to discuss results of the first comprehensive government study of cancer rates among IBM employees who worked in circuit board manufacturing.

The NIOSH study of job-related mortality and cancer among more than 34,000 former IBM’ers in New York’s Southern Tier found the total number of deaths from all causes and all cancers combined were lower than what would be expected from the general population.

However, the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin says the report found that deaths from specific types of cancer — including non-Hodgkins lymphoma, mesothelioma, rectal cancer and testicular cancer — were more frequent in some groups than would be expected.

The workers in the study were employed by IBM in Endicott, near Binghamton, between 1969 and 2011.

The NIOSH — a federal agency that conducts research and makes recommendations for preventing work-related injuries, illnesses and deaths — conducted the study at the request of the state Department of Health and other stakeholders, the Binghamton newspaper reported.

IBM operated a plant in Ulster County from the mid-1950s until 1999, and it continues to operate facilities in Dutchess County.
